Maya Angelou at the Evergreen State College
We went with a bunch of Casey’s friends to see Dr Maya Angelou at Evergreen. They had been asking her to come and speak for at least 10 years. As an Australian I had not really heard of her except for via Oprah. She was quite inspirational. Being lost and later was a stroke of luck in the end as we got to sit on the floor right near her, thanks to some poor planning and lack of space on Evergreen’s part.
In many ways it was like listening to my own Grandmothers stories, with an underlying theme thrown in to give them cohesiveness. The theme was that we are all Rainbows in the Clouds. In other words through the not so great and horrible experiences we or others might be going through, we can all be positive highlights for those people.
At some point I believe I will pick up some of her books to read. If you ever get the chance to see her do so.
